LAX / LGB

Long Beach

LOS ANGELES -- The vessel backlog in the Port of Los Angeles-Long Beach reached
another record level Monday, and the Marine Exchange of Southern California warned
that congestion at the largest U.S. container complex could get worse as the peak
shipping season moves toward its busiest period. There were 94 vessels in port Monday,
with more than 50 of those sitting at anchor awaiting a berth. Of that total, 51 were container
ships and 29 of those were at anchor.
According to the Marine Exchange's daily report, the situation could deteriorate further
this week. "We are predicting 7 0 new arrivals between now and Friday, and probably less
than 50 sailings during that same time frame, so we may even surpass these new numbers
soon," the Exchange stated in its Monday report.
The trend in recent weeks has seen vessels in port peak at 80 or more ships on Monday
mornings, dropping below 70 by midweek. However, with each passing week, the backlog gets
higher and does not drop as low as the previous week by Wednesday or Thursday.
"The trend is that the congestion is steadily increasing," said Manny Aschemeyer, executive
director of the Marine Exchange.
As a result, vessels are being delayed in port for at least four days before labor is assigned.
Some of the 13 container terminals are so congested that they do not request labor even
when it is available.Despite the hiring since late summer of more than 1,000 part-time
longshoremen and the promotion of hundreds of part-timers to registered status, employers
continue to have problems filling the 12 to 14-man gangs required to work under each of
the more than 105 gantry cranes in the harbor.October is normally the height of the
peak-shipping season, but with the large vessel backlog that exists today and the fact
that vessel rotations in the trans-Pacific are running almost a week behind schedule,
terminal operators expect to be handling peak-season volumes through November.
The congestion is expected to continue even though carriers now are routinely diverting
vessels to other ports. The Marine Exchange reported that 39 vessels were diverted from
LA -Long Beach since July.
