All pieces of cargo must be properly packed and stackable to ensure safe transportation. We will not accept a piece of cargo for transportation when it appears to be:
• Improperly packed;
• Of an inherent nature that indicates that transportation could not be provided without damage to other shipments.
We will add a surcharge for a piece of cargo for transportation when it appears to be unstackable because:
• It does not have a flat top;
• Its packing strength is insufficient; or
• It has an uneven surface on the top or the sides.
Vessel operators and port operators measure, on a voluntary basis, the level of radioactivity of loaded export containers they handle, following the guidelines published by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan on August 3, 2011. If an excessive level of radioactivity is detected in a loaded container, a port operator or a shipping company may return it to its owner.
Ocean cargo that contains products made from naturally radioactive materials or contains naturally radioactive minerals may emit an excessive level of radioactivity. We recommend that customers regularly measure the level of radioactivity of their naturally radioactive products or materials to make sure that any radioactive emission falls well below the maximum allowable level.
If a container is found to emit an excessive level of radioactivity at a port and needs to be returned to its owner, the owner shall be liable for the cost of returning such a container.
